As some have guessed we are announcing the new generation of Monolith Flat with SDRM configuration. S could stand for Super or Shuriken or Shurikone

We experimented with different takes on adding pre-breakers to Flat, the last iteration that we sold was auger based. I thought about adding same pancake pre-breaker like we have on Conical and MAX but I wanted to do something different with DRM like arrangement to get different taste profile for Monolith product line.
Thinking is that having Monolith Flat with pancake pre-breaker would not provide a taste profile that is meaningfully different or better from MAX, MAX can do everything better. So with no taste difference I just could not get excited about doing it. What's the point?
I always liked the DRM arrangement, but I did not like the "upside down" single dosing interpretation of it. I just thought the configuration was structurally weak. I bought first M3 back in 2010...
So I set out to upgrade the Monolith Flat, keep the format, but use new Shurikone like style conical burr as pre-breaker that goes into the new blind Shuriken 80mm flat burr. After couple of burr iterations to dial everything in, we did taste tests and pretty much all of us noticed first the smoothness and then some extra body.
The taste profile is smoothness, blended flavors, rounded peaks, not as clear as MAX, but different in its own way from both Conical and MAX. Additional thing I noticed, it seems like ease of puck preparation is on Conical grinder level.
The taste profile was something that we really liked and what convinced us that this is the way to go. I think you guys will like this very much.
We tried it with both dark roasts, Saka, Vivace, Malabar Gold, medium roasts like Herkimer and light roasts like Manhattan Coffee, Black and White and Sey. It worked extremely well across the range.
So what accounts for difference in taste? I think its the feed rate of beans into the burrs. Its always about the feed rate. The DRM configuration is force feeding beans into the burrs as its pre-breaking them. In fact, the first version of SDRM we made was force feeding so much that it would easily clog up the flat Shuriken burrs because they could not keep up with the incoming feed. I had to balance the output of Shurikone style pre-breaker to allow for force feed without overfilling the flat burr. So the final product force feeds but at the rate so its not overwhelming what flat burr can process. You can hear the force feed in grinding sound since it sounds distinctly different from gravity feed.
Pre-orders open today, shipping around July. Price is unchanged at $2650. We have limited number of motors on hand for this July build. More is coming for August/September build.
